Job Description
Design Studio Manager Role
My client is a museum in the city of London and are currently looking for a Studio Manager to work with them full time on a 3-month contract. You will be working in the Exhibition Department and reporting to Design and Brand Manager and managing the day-to-day smooth running of the marketing design team, co-ordinating the design and production of a wide range of printed and digital material, from marketing campaigns to design for advocacy, to ensure that all work is produced on time, to budget, to a high standard, and following the Museum’s visual language.
Tasks and Responsibilities: –
1. Coordinate and prioritise design and production workload (print and digital) of the marketing design team. Effective management of all projects to ensure all work is delivered promptly and to deadline to the relevant people.
2. Compiling and managing / maintaining detailed design and production schedules for specific marketing projects to track progress and prioritise work to ensure all projects are produced to deadline, chasing progress as needed and reporting at project meetings.
3. Oversee the planning and detailed scheduling of installation of on-site signage, including poster schedules, for promotion of exhibitions and other marketing led projects, and coordination with relevant departments and externals
4. Participate in the development of project briefs and obtain clear written specifications. Liaise with clients to ensure that needs are consolidated, clearly formulated, and agreed.
5. Develop and constantly improve / streamline systems, including project review and analysis, to propose better and more effective management of design projects.
6. With Design and Brand Manager, appoint external designers, and suppliers (printers and contractors) for design and print production, and manage those relationships to maximum benefit to the Museum, reviewing costs to deliver efficiency gains, and monitoring quality control to ensure high standards are maintained.
7. Sending artwork to print on urgent jobs, if required. Check amends have been made to proofs, check design layouts with the Design and Brand Manager / Lead Graphic Designer and circulate proofs to clients for review / approval when required.
8. Support the Design and Brand Manager to issue the Museum’s logo, ensure correct authorisation obtained, within agreed timeframe, check guidelines followed for use of logo, and maintain an audit / archive approved artwork.
9. Liaison with IS department and external suppliers for IT support needs for design team.
10. Responsible for effective file management on server for artwork – print and digital – filing, naming, archiving.
11. Ensure good client relationships are maintained and developed.
12. Manage performance and career development of Design Studio Assistant
13. Represent the Marketing design team in relation to scheduling of design projects and deliverables at meetings as required, occasionally deputising for the Design and Brand Manager.
14. Other duties as required and appropriate to the Studio Manager role.
15. Management of Design Studio Assistant with Design and Brand Manager, management of externals (including contract/freelance designers, photographers, artworkers etc) working on-site within the team.
16. Technical decisions required regularly in specifying the most suitable printing methods, materials, contractors, and suppliers for each individual brief, to maintain quality of output, whilst proposing efficiently gains, to ensure projects are within budget with cost-effective solutions.
17. Graphic design or print production background. Practical experience of managing a design studio. Understanding of design for difference disciplines, including digital applications.
Education: –
Degree in Graphic design, A level and GCSE Qualifications
Essential: –
* Extensive understanding of design processes for both print and digital design.
* Comprehensive print buying and production knowledge.
* High level of IT literacy across wide range of Microsoft applications, including excel
* Ability to guide clients through a design brief and represent design with internal and external stakeholders.
* Meticulous attention to detail.
* Digital design software understanding
* Knowledge of and / or experience using Adobe creative suite, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Aftereffects.

* High level of written and verbal communication skills
* Experience of commissioning and negotiating with consultants and suppliers.
