SRG is working with a multinational company who specialise in the creation of speciality chemicals for a range of markets. They are now looking to advance their technology and are looking to hire a PhD Research Chemist who will specialise in the synthesis of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), particularly via chemical vapour deposition methods. The successful applicant will lead research in this area and help to establish a brand-new laboratory in which to build CVD reactors and conduct experiments to produce carbon nanotubes, as well as evaluating their characteristics, properties and potential in new and existing market areas. This is a unique opportunity to conduct exciting research in nanochemistry in a well-established, well-funded business and with access to first-class equipment and laboratories.

Role / Description
Establishing and running a new laboratory, working independently with guidance from the CTO
Designing and conducting lab-based experiments to synthesise carbon nanotubes (CNTs) using chemical vapour deposition (CVD)
Building a CVD reactor unit which can be adapted as necessary for better control of reactions and CNT morphology
Managing projects from research stage, through experimentation, characterisation and evaluation to understand and develop new way of manufacturing CNTs
Building an in depth understanding of the process conditions in CVD in order to produce different CNT diameters, lengths, wall numbers, helicity, alignments.
Utilising literature, market insights, trends and industry conferences to inform work on synthesis methods, reaction mechanisms, feedstocks, catalyst selection and equipment
Establishing appropriate characterisation and evaluation methods, interpreting results and reporting on findings
Requirements
PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, Nanotechnology, Nanoscience or similar
First degree (BSc/MChem) must be in Chemistry
Post-doctoral/research experience focused on classical organic synthesis
Research on producing carbon nanotubes, graphene or fullerene is preferred
Understanding and/or experience of chemical vapour deposition methods
Experience in constructing lab-scale experimental reactor rigs
Self-motivated and excited by research into new, disruptive technologies
