Mechanical Technician / Lab Technician

Immediate start
Southampton
£14.04 per hour
Monday to Friday 9am – 5pm (some flexibility)
Temporary to Permanent

Tate are currently working with the University of Southampton to recruit a Mechanical Technician to work within the Lab department as part of the Infrastructure team providing practical mechanical and safety support to the Lab department.

We are looking for someone who has supported laboratories and the building on a wider scale as opposed to a more traditional Lab Technician, where their experience has mainly consisted of using lab equipment.

Responsibilities

To report to the Senior Technician and support the Health and Safety Advisor, Infrastructure Team members and Phd Students / Researchers.

· To be knowledgeable enough to look after gases, water, lab furniture and all types of in-lab installation – Including putting up shelves/clearing floods/supervising contractors etc
· Carry out (where appropriate) the installation of lab components and services, advising on safety elements of all installations – Including lab services, modifications to layouts, and general laboratory modifications.
· Support mechanical workshop activities in the lab Including producing technical drawings, machining components, basic tool servicing and general workplace quality.
· Manage the PAT testing and reporting to the Electronics Technician on issues and targets
· Advise on safety requirements for the labs and project work.
· Assist with the electrical safety testing of labs.
· Ensure statutory paperwork required within the Infrastructure team – Including Standard Operating Procedures, Risk Assessments and Method Statements are completed and maintained

Experience/Skills
· Experience working within a Lab department
· Previous work experience within a technical support role
· Skill level equivalent to achievement of HNC, A-Level, NVQ3
· Holds a safety qualification (IOSH, NEBOSH)
· Ideally holds an Electrical qualification or has a basic understanding and appreciation for electronics
· Experience of operating technical equipment and the ability to carry out specialist testing
· Basic Mechanical experience – Drilling, milling, turning & hand tools/skills
· Ability to make effective use of standard and specialist computer systems
· Able to demonstrate a good understanding of technical processes relating to work area
